Of the varieties of drapes available, silk panels imbue a room with a sense of elegance and grace. Additionally, silk curtains are available in an array of varieties and weights, referred to as “mm” (pronounced “mommy”), meaning that they are appropriate for any season or climate.

Of the types of silk in which silk panels are available, the most common are taffeta and duiponi. Taffeta is known for its high sheen and the distinctive rustling sound it makes when it moves. Duiponi silk curtains are a slightly heavier silk window treatment and is characterized by texture variations which can include roughness and nibbing, giving duiponi silk a look that is both elegant and cozy. Other varieties of silk in which lined silk curtains may come include China silk, which comes in a variety of weights but can be prone to ripped seams, and Jacquard, which is heavier in weight and characterized by distinctive tone on tone weaving.

Each of these silks drape differently, meaning that panels of Jacquard silk may lay more heavily, while panels of taffeta will rustle gently in a breeze when the window is left open. Additionally, wispy panels of chiffon have become popular, particularly in tropical climates, though these panels tend to require additional care due to their delicate nature.

When deciding on the appropriate silk window treatments for a room, there are a variety of aspects to consider. Beyond considerations regarding window measurements and fabric pattern and color, it is important to consider fabric care. While some silks can be handwashed, including duiponi silk, other varieties, such as China silk, handwashing or dry-cleaning. If the home sees a lot of activity such as entertaining or if it is host to a family with children, the cleaning requirements can be particularly important.

Regardless of the type of ready made silk curtains or silk panels selected, the fabric is characterized by a dye-ability that accepts vivid, jewel tone hues just as easily as it does delicate pastels. To maintain them (and the room’s beauty), always follow manufacturer’s directions for care.
