Drapery grommets are fast replacing tab tops and rod pockets as the fashionable way to hang curtains. Unlike tabs, which stick out above the top of the curtain and through which the curtain rod is threaded, and rod pockets which are gathered and bulky at the top. Grommets create an elegant, finished appearance without additional bulk or detailing. Grommets are small eyelet holes in the drapery, reinforced by a ring, through which the curtain rod is passed. Rather than leaving the curtain to hang below the rod, the grommet curtain allows the curtain and rod to be integrated into one piece of décor.

Curtains grommets are made from a variety of materials, including metal and plastic. They also come in a wide range of sizes, with most fitting rods that are two inches in diameter. It is possible to fit the eyelet size to the curtain rod, ensuring that the look of the curtains is perfect for the room in every way. Grommet drapes, because they are able to be coordinated with a wide variety of rods and finials, create a polished appearance. The drapery grommets can be coordinated with the majority or curtain rod metals, woods, and plastics.

Grommet curtains can be created from a wide variety of fabrics. However, for fabrics that are diaphanous, or even just lighter in weight, it is essential that grommet tape be used. This tape is sewn to the back of the curtain and serves as additional reinforcement to prevent fabric tearing. While it is critical to use grommet tape when the fabric is less substantial, using the tape to reinforce any type of fabric to which curtain grommets are affixed is a good idea. Generally, fabrics that are heavier in weight look best for grommet drapes, and unusual curtain choices, including leather, look excellent when paired with grommets.

When choosing curtains, a wide variety of styles are available. While tab tops can create a casual look and rod pockets lend themselves to formal spaces, curtains with drapery grommets are an excellent way to create a polished look for window treatments while imbuing the room with a sense of comfort and style.
